Shortening Curtains and Drapes – How Is It Done?
Shortening a curtain depends on the material it is made from and the tools you have available. Here are a few general steps for shortening a curtain:
1. Measuring
Measure how much you want to shorten the curtain and mark the cutting point with chalk or a special fabric pen. Make sure the cutting edge is straight and even.
2. Cutting
Use fabric scissors or a rotary cutter to cut the curtain to the desired length. If the curtain has fringes or decorative trims along the edge, make sure you keep them intact or adjust them after cutting.
3. Securing the Edge
To prevent the fabric from fraying, you can use a special textile adhesive to seal the cut edge, or you can make a simple stitch around the edges to reinforce them. Make sure the stitching is even and discreet, preferably on the back side of the curtain.
4. Finishing
If the curtain has rings or hanging hooks, adjust them to the new length and make sure they are securely fixed.
5. Final Adjustment
Calculate the right height for your curtain before cutting. Some curtains are designed to touch the floor, while others leave a small gap, depending on personal preference and the style of the room.
It is important to work carefully and precisely in order to achieve an evenly shortened curtain with a pleasant appearance. If you are not sure about your sewing or cutting skills, you can use the Retusescu tailoring workshop to do this for you.
