Zipper Replacement – How Is It Done?

Replacing a zipper may seem like a complicated task, but with a little care and patience, you can repair or replace the zipper on your garment. Here is a step-by-step guide to replacing a zipper. If you are unable to do it, we are waiting for you at RETUSESCU.

Materials Needed

A new zipper, suitable in size and color.
Scissors.
Sewing tools, thread, and needle.
Laundry service, if the garment needs cleaning before replacing the zipper.

Step 1

Make sure you have a suitable zipper for replacement. Measure the old zipper to determine the correct length. Also, make sure the new zipper has the same tooth size as the old one.

Step 2

Decide whether you will replace the entire zipper or only the slider. In many cases, the issue is only with the slider, and replacing it may solve the problem.

Step 3

If you are replacing the entire zipper, open the seams that attach the old zipper to the fabric. Do this carefully with scissors and make sure you do not cut the fabric or the seams outside the necessary areas.

Step 4

Remove the old zipper. Sometimes, you may need to cut the old zipper in order to take it out.

Step 5

Insert the new zipper through the space where you removed the old one. Make sure the end of the new zipper is positioned at the bottom.

Step 6

Secure the new zipper in place with safety pins or temporary stitches to hold it in position before the final sewing.

Step 7

Start sewing the zipper along the lines of the old seams. Use the appropriate sewing tools and thread. The stitches should be strong and hold the zipper firmly in place.

Step 8

If you are only replacing the slider, attach the new slider to the existing zipper, usually by sliding or fastening it onto the zipper. Make sure it is securely fixed.

Step 9

Check that the new zipper works properly. Pull it up and down to make sure it slides easily and closes correctly.

Step 10

If necessary, cut off the excess zipper so it matches the desired length, making sure you leave enough space for sewing.

Step 11

If the garment needs cleaning, take it to a laundry service before replacing the zipper, as the seams may become fragile during the washing process.

With care and skill, you can successfully replace a zipper. If you do not feel confident in your sewing abilities, you can use the services of a professional tailor to make the replacement for you.
